Keep social campaigns readable with safe zones
Safe zones ensure your message stays crisp and readable after platform UI overlays, dynamic aspect ratio crops, and mobile viewport resizing.
Safe zones keep text, logos, and calls to action away from the parts of a social post that an app may cover. Build them into each target artboard before you polish the layout.
Platform interfaces change, so do not treat one percentage as a permanent rule for every app. Check the current publishing preview for the channel you are using, then leave enough room for account information, captions, controls, and crops.
Add safe zones to each campaign format
- Start from the approved campaign source. If you do not have one yet, use the source-first campaign setup.
- Create the formats you need, such as 9:16 story, 4:5 feed, and 1:1 square.
- Add guides for the top, bottom, and sides of each artboard.
- Place the headline, mark, and action inside those guides.
- Keep important text away from the right edge of vertical video, where action controls often appear.
- Preview the artboard at phone size. If you have to zoom in to read it, the type is too small.
- Check square and profile-grid crops separately. A safe story layout can still lose its subject in a square crop.
Use the guides as a boundary for essential information, not as a box that every decorative element must stay inside. Images and background shapes can run to the edge when the crop is intentional.
Check social assets before export
- The headline is readable at phone size.
- The call to action is not under a caption or control area.
- The mark has clear space from every edge.
- The focal subject survives the intended crop.
- Text still has enough contrast over the final image or video frame.
- Every required aspect ratio has been reviewed on its own.
Keep safe zones useful as the campaign changes
Put the guides in the source document and keep them with each artboard. When copy gets longer or an image changes, review the safe area again rather than assuming the old placement still works.
After approval, prepare the set with the vector and export workflow. That gives you one final place to check dimensions, names, and output formats.
Pro tips
- Check the publishing platform's latest preview before a major launch.
- Test the longest approved headline, not the shortest placeholder.
- Keep a little more room than the interface appears to need.
